Join PEEC and the Santa Fe Extension Master Gardeners for a special Earth Month presentation all about the power of seeds and seed saving. This program will focus on the miracle of seeds, how this resource is endangered, why it's important, and what small things each of us can do to help restore genetic biodiversity amongst our crops. This biodiversity has been lost over the past 100 years since people started buying more of their food, buying their seeds from seed companies, and stopped saving their seeds as frequently. Through seed saving and seed sharing, we have the power to help preserve it!

The Santa Fe Extensions Master Gardeners have developed the Santa Fe Seed Library, a project aimed at engaging the public in the effort to save seeds. People can "check out" seeds, save part of their crop to harvest seeds, and return some of those seeds to the Seed Library as a way to pay it forward to the community. Attendees will learn how Seed Libraries, such as this one, work and how to operate a seed library during a pandemic!

In this workshop, you'll learn the advantages of using locally adapted seeds and how they offer resilience to climate change, how to get started saving seeds, which vegetable seeds are easiest to save, how to know when seeds are ready to collect, and how to store them.

This is workshop is part of the "Growing Together" series, running April – May, organized by the Los Alamos History Museum, Los Alamos Public Library Systems, and PEEC.
