At the Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), our dedicated community of volunteers bring a wide range of unique skills, enthusiasm, and energy to Los Alamos Nature Center. Volunteers play a vital role in our daily operations—assisting with exhibits, caring for our resident critters, supporting public events, tending to our gardens, and more. They also lead guided hikes, help in the gift shop, and provide valuable information to visitors.
Whether you’re passionate about nature, education, or community engagement, there’s a place for you at PEEC. What would you like to learn? What could you share? The first impression of the nature center! Keeping a warm, professional and helpful attitude, the front desk volunteer handles visitor’s questions, orients visitors to the exhibits, completes gift shop purchases, and more. The shifts of this position are 2-3 hours and are very customer service-oriented. We require a commitment of at least 4 hours per month and encourage a recurring weekly schedule.
Morning Bird Feeding
As a part of this volunteer team, the wild birds (and birders) appreciate you! This shift is in the mornings from 9-9:30 and involves placing and filling bird feeders at the nature center.
Community Outreach
If you love being social, come represent PEEC at our various outreach events. These volunteers help with anything from recruiting volunteers and members, promoting our programs, crafts with kids, educational games, helping educate families about nature and more…
Exhibits
Volunteers in this role work closely with our Director of Programs and help with image gathering, brainstorming, and possibly identifying community experts to help write new content and assist in maintenance of our exhibits.
Gardens
For those deeply passionate about gardening and detail-oriented, this is a great volunteer opportunity for you. We always need help tending to the weeds and landscape upkeep around the nature center. This position assists our amazing landscaping volunteers, who have dedicated many many years of expertise and efforts to the garden.
Critter Care & Outreach
Volunteers in this role are trained to feed and provide water for our critters as well as how to clean their tanks! This is a fun and very important task which is done daily. We also love to have enthusiastic volunteers that want to talk to provide public demos and answer questions about our live animal exhibits. Note: We can only accept a limited number of volunteers for this task, and all training is provided. For this specific volunteer job we do ask that prospective volunteers be willing to be on a weekly schedule to help for at least one season.
