Size: 6 - 20 ft (2 - 6 m)
Growth: shrub, tree; perennial

Status: native; common
Habitat: fields, mountains, along fresh water at elevations up to 8,000 ft (2,400 m)

Can form dense thickets producing dark red to blackish berries. The bark and leaves are poisonous, particularly in early spring; the astringent fruit can be used for jams and jellies.
