Nature Center Tour | Grades K – 12

Visit the Los Alamos Nature Center for a guided visit of our exhibits, a planetarium show, and a guided hike on our nearby trails or time to explore our nature play area. 2.5 hours.

Preschool Field Trip

Preschoolers explore nature through hands-on activities and play. Students will visit the exhibits and meet our critters, play outside, and see a short planetarium show about shapes in space. 2 hours.

Kindergarten Field Trip

Kindergarteners use their sense to explore and learn about shapes and patterns in nature during a play-based field trip. One indoor station and two outdoor stations each include a guided activity and time for play in rich natural environments. 2 hours.

Early Elementary Field Trips | Grades 1 – 3

These field trips to the Los Alamos Nature Center link with the Pajarito Plateau Field Science classroom lessons. Students go on a guided visit of our exhibits, hike on a nearby trail, and enjoy time for child-directed play outside. First graders learn about animal life, second grade classes explore weathering and erosion, and third graders look at plant and animal interactions. 2.5 hours.

Bird Banding Field Trip | Grades 5 – 6

Introduce your students to migratory bird biology and to science in the field. Students get up close to our local bird species, observe a field science investigation in action, and try their own hand at bird netting and banding with practice birds. This field trip is only available to students in Los Alamos County and takes place in the fall. 2.5 hour field trip at Bandelier National Monument with pre and post field trip classroom visits.

Astronomy Lessons | Grades 5 – 12

Visit the Los Alamos Nature Center planetarium to see an astronomy movie and enjoy a narrated star show by expert astronomers. Younger students can also explore the solar system with hands-on activities. 1 – 2 hour field trip.

Snowshoe Hikes | Grades 4 – 6

Try snowshoeing with your students! Explore a local trail and discover winter ecology. This field trip can last 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the location. Weather dependent.

DPU Field Trips | Grades 3 – 12

Visit Los Alamos County’s water and energy facilities with your students through PEEC’s partnership with the Department of Public Utilities. Destinations include water production and wastewater treatment facilities along with the Abiquiu Dam hydropower generation facility. Only available to students in Los Alamos County.
