Want to help kids get outside?

Are you concerned with how kids these days seem to be glued to screens? Are you worried that the generation growing up now won’t love and want to protect nature the way you do? Feel powerless to make any change? PEEC and Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to give you an opportunity to make a difference in a powerful and personal way.

BBBS has a long waiting list, especially for boys wanting a Big. Here at PEEC, we know many outdoors-oriented men and women who might have 6-8 hours a month to dedicate to taking a child outside to hike, snowshoe, ski, and enjoy all that the outdoors has to offer.

Together PEEC and BBBS are starting a new program, The Big Outdoors, to match kids with a Big who can show them how much fun the outdoors can be. We would love to have you join us.

If you would like to be a Big or a Little, please email us.

Questions and Answers:

Q: How much time will I need to give if I sign up?

A: BBBS asks for a 1-year commitment, and 6-8 hours per month (for example, two 3-hour outings per month)

Q: I don’t know anything about kids.  How would I know what to do?

A: This is not a social work program, or a counseling program. It’s just a chance for kids to get some one-on-one time with an adult who will give them their undivided attention. BB/BS will provide you with training and mentoring support. Have a question? Did an issue come up? BBBS is always there to talk with you and help you work through anything.

Q: What if my Little doesn’t like the outdoors?

A: BBBS will be sure to match you with a child who has an interest in the outdoors.

Q: What kind of training will I get?

A: BBBS will provide Big-specific training; PEEC will provide “how to help kids have fun outside” training, and First Aid/CPR, if you aren’t already certified. There will also be plenty of fun opportunities to connect with other Bigs and Littles in the program.

Q: I travel a lot. Can I still participate?

A: The match schedule is flexible. If you can’t meet twice during one month, contact BBBS to work out other arrangements.

Q: Will these be kids from Los Alamos?

A: Yes.

Q: When does the program start?

A: We hope to have 10 Bigs signed up by January 15th so that we can get background checks done and start the program mid-April.

Q: How do I learn more?

A: Contact Katie Watson via email or call 662-0460.
