Acorn Woodpeckers at the Nature Center

This week as Marion Stelts was spending time at the nature center, he observed some interesting bird behavior – acorn woodpeckers acting like flycatchers. “There were both a male and female acorn woodpecker hanging out,” he reported to the PEEC Birders Yahoo Group. “They would perch in a snag and watch for passing insects. They would catch them in mid-air and return to the snag. They would repeat this until they had a bill full of insects and then leave for a short while. They would return with an empty beak and repeat the process.”
