Community Letter from the National Wildlife Federation Community Wildlife Habit

To The Los Alamos Community:

On behalf of the National Wildlife Federation®, we are pleased to congratulate Los Alamos on
participating in the Community Wildlife HabitatTM program for almost 10 years. They were the
first community in New Mexico to certify in 2015 and they have re-certified every year since.
During their time in the program, Los Alamos helped to certify hundreds of properties in the
Certified Wildlife Habitat® program. They also engaged their residents through several education
and outreach events including tabling at the annual Earth Day Festival, offering programming to
students and families and hosting garden tours. This is just a small snapshot of the great work that
the community has completed over the years.

Los Alamos’ accomplishments would not be possible without the contributions of their community
wildlife habitat team, which include Selvi and Hari Viswanathan, Richard and Hedy Dunn, Laura
Loy and Michele Altherr, as well as the countless volunteers and local partners who helped the
community create and maintain wildlife habitat.

The National Wildlife Federation is proud to have a community like Los Alamos as part of our
national network of communities that have chosen to make creating wildlife habitat and
sustainable gardening practices an important priority. Congratulations on this amazing impact and
we look forward to seeing all that you continue to accomplish in the years to come!

Sincerely,
The Community Wildlife Habitat Team

  1. Selvi,

Congratulations for your work to improve wildlife habitat in Los Alamos. Your pond is attractive to so many creatures and you have become an excellent photographer (like your son and grandson).

    1. Thank you very much Barbara .,
Yes water sources are limited here so the pond does help many birds and animals . But I want to stress bird baths also help to attract birds..It is easier to certify a yard.

  2. Selvi
Congratulations to you and all of the community members involved in this important project. Let’s continue to make habitat for wildlife within our backyards and community spaces.

  3. Thank you Selvi teacher, for sharing this with me . I also thank you for letting me know from time to time the wonderful contribution of PEEC . I am sure it makes a big difference to the wild life habitat and the world at large. Congratulations to LOS ALA MOS Community.

    1. Yes Jayashree! You are right PEEC has been very helpful and encouraged the community.
I liked the letter by National Wildlife Federation so wanted to share so community knows their participation..
      Thank you very much.

  4. I recall thinking how a dry and rocky habitat like Los ALamos would support wildlife. As I walked in Selvi’s garden in 1995, I realized it was because she provided the food, water, and shelter very carefully, and maintained it all year! Its a huge achievement and her constant hard work and dedication made it possible for Los Alamos to certify 100+ homes/establishments (a requirement for qualification) as wildlife habitat. We have enjoyed pictures from the critter cam which she and Hari set up and are amazed at how many different species benefitted from that small pond!

Im sure the next generation will continue this great work!

    1. Dear Venil as you are also very much interested in wildlife specially birds you noticed our garden when you visited us 30 years ago. I retired in 1995 so needed to do something productive. Like you I was interested in birds only but our yard gave opportunities to watch Bobcats, Raccoon families and foxes etc.
Then joined PEEC in 2005 made possible to work with this wonderful Community.
